United Nations Commemoration of the International Day of Vesak. The venerable monks are now at the United Nations Headquarters in New York for the Commemoration of the International Day of Vesak on May 12, 2026 at 3:00 PM at the ECOSOC Chamber. This prestigious event marks the 27th anniversary of the General Assembly Resolution 54/115 on International recognition of the Day of Vesak at the United Nations. The Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations and the Permanent Mission of Thailand to the United Nations are co-hosting this historic event. Venerable Bhikkhu Paññākāra has been invited as the Guest Speaker to deliver a speech at this auspicious occasion. The program includes religious blessings from the Theravada and Mahayana Buddhist traditions by Buddhist priests of Sri Lanka and Thailand, as well as statements by participating UN Member States. The event is attended by venerable members of the Buddhist clergy, Permanent Representatives and diplomats from UN member states, members of the staff of the United Nations and Permanent Missions to the United Nations, and the general public.
