A mote of dust in a sunbeam. 🌍✨🛰️ In 1990, at the request of astronomer Carl Sagan, NASA’s Voyager 1 spacecraft turned its camera back toward its birthplace one last time before entering the interstellar void. The Single Pixel: From a distance of about 6 billion kilometers, Earth is so small that it doesn't even fill a single pixel of the camera's sensor. The light streaks you see across the frame are actually "lens flares" caused by the Sun, which was very close to Earth from the spacecraft's perspective. Our world just happened to be sitting right in the middle of one of those scattered rays. Sagan's Legacy: Carl Sagan famously used this image to remind us of our responsibility to one another. He noted that every king, every peasant, every lover, and every hater in human history lived out their lives on that tiny, "pale blue dot." In the vastness of the cosmos, it is the only home we have ever known, and the only one we have.
