Anura Kumara Dissanayake visits Katchatheevu, pledges to safeguard Sri Lankan territory

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake made a quick, unannounced visit to Katchatheevu, after vowing to safeguard “seas and islands” around the country and resist any “external pressure”. He was in Jaffna to launch development projects, including the expansion of the Myliddy Fisheries Harbour, when he reaffirmed that Sri Lanka would protect its seas and islands and that his government would "not allow any external force to exert influence in this regard.” His comments came days after actor-turned-politician Vijay said at a Madurai rally that Katchatheevu should be retrieved by India to resolve the recurring arrests of Tamil Nadu fishermen.
